The Press is important to us from a publicity point of view - improving our visible stature in the community and beyond. The website of course allows for a much wider reach and is accessed by considerably greater numbers than those that might cast their eye over the local press back pages!

The match report section is - importantly - a means of reporting our activities in way that actually helps our friends in the Press. Carry on sending direct to Kentish Gazette's Mark Stokes if you do so already but copy me into the email “loop” so I can keep the web site stuff up to date until YOUR TEAM  enters stuff directly using the system here on the new site!!

Anything posted here will also get to the KG sports desk (separate from Mark I think) and other press especially AdScene who also provide generous coverage.. BBC Radio Kent have expressed interest in certain big match items used for their sports web pages.

Match Reports

Day 1 – Canterbury v Glasgow Western (Scottish) Won 5-0

Canterbury started their European campaign against Glasgow with some fantastic possession play against a half court press. This allowed Canterbury to gain a 3 – 0 lead by half time, with all three goals coming from the on-form Cathy Gilliat-Smith including a well taken penalty stroke.

After half time Glasgow stepped up the pressure and forced Canterbury to play slightly deeper. However Canterbury kept overall control of the game and continued to play some sweet hockey. This was rewarded with two further goals, another for Gilliat-Smith and one for Susie Townsend following some good footwork. Final score 5-0.

Day 2 – Canterbury v Old Alexandra (Irish) Won 3-1

Once again Canterbury was faced with a team playing a tight half court press to try and limit their penetration into the attacking circle. However, Canterbury kept a disciplined structure and moved the ball around the defence and midfield with elegance. Eventually 20 minutes into the first half the first opportunity arose from a quick free hit with Mel Cluelow playing a one two with Nikki Triggs, before sweetly slotting the ball home.

Just after the break goal number two came from Jen Wilson who picked up a rebound off the corner strike of Cluelow, firing the ball past the goal keeper. Canterbury continued to play the ball around, with the forward line continuously leading to break gaps in the oppositions defence.

Lucy Barnes then found herself scoring her first European goal for Canterbury to give the Green and whites a three – nil lead. The goal came from another well worked one two between Triggs and Cluelow which was then dummied through the legs of Cluelow to Barnes who fired home from the top of the circle. Final score 3-0.

Day 3 – Canterbury v Rot Wels Koln (Germans) Lost 2-1

The most disappointing day Canterbury Ladies 1st Eleven have experienced! To be out-classed on the pitch and lose a game is easy to understand, but to dominate over a team with some outstanding hockey and yet sill lose, is the hardest thing to swallow.

Canterbury took an early lead from a superb corner strike by Cluelow past the foot side of the German goal keeper, within the first 5 minutes of the game. Then unfortunately were unable to capitalise on a fantastic break down the left side of the pitch. This was initiated by Kirsty Chambers who took a quick free hit from edge of the defensive circle to find Gilliat-Smith on the wing, who then found Wilson in the attacking circle. Wilson lifted the ball around the sliding keeper to the far post where unfortunately the fast approaching Susannah Townsend was unable to steer the ball into the open goal!

Back up the other end of the pitch, goal keeper Becky Duggan was showing a top class performance with a double save from a German short corner. However, then just two minutes before half time a low drag flick from the top of the circle to Duggan’s right allowed the Germans to get back into the game.

Canterbury came out for the second half with all guns blazing winning a short corner within minutes of the restart. Using the Cluelow / Triggs combo at the top of the circle the ball fell short to Hayley Brown who was just unable to get the final touch towards goal. Canterbury were beginning to think it was not going to be their day when another superb chance again from the work between Chambers and Townsend went astray.

Then came the big blow to Canterbury with only 5 minutes remaining on the clock, the Germans made a break down the left side of the pitch crossing the ball deep into the circle where they managed to get a touch to deflect the ball past Duggan.

The last few minutes Canterbury frantically tried to counter attack but the German team were then in full control and cleverly played in the corners of the pitch to run the time down. Huge disappointment as the final whistle was blown – Canterbury deserved a place in the final the following day but instead found themselves playing off for the Bronze medal. It was a game that showed just how thin line is between winning and losing!

Day 4 – Canterbury v Amsterdam (Dutch) Bronze medal match Lost 2-1

In Canterbury’s European history they were yet to beat a Dutch side, and so Canterbury we determined to change that this year and at least go home with a bronze medal. However, the game did not start as planned and Canterbury found themselves a goal down within the first 2 minutes. This goal came from a break down the right side with an initial save from Duggan but then was unable to stop the rebound as Amsterdam pounced on the ball.

Canterbury continued to be put under pressure and Duggan again pulling off some fine saves to keep them in the game. Then the equaliser came for Canterbury on 26 minutes with Rachel Walsh penetrating the attacking circle from deep in left half to then fire the ball into the bottom left of the goal. 1-1. Simple!

Hope was restored in the changing room at half time with an all or nothing speech from Clewlow who through her international career has found her in this situation many times.

However, back out on the pitch Amsterdam were also unwavering and put the pressure on again with a penalty corner won in the thirty seventh minute. Once again Duggan was equal to them with a fine save. The pressure against for Canterbury and the inevitable second goal came for the Dutch side from a manoeuvre down the base line with their forward finding a gap between Duggan and the post. 2-1 down.

Canterbury suffered another blow shortly after the goal with Nikki Triggs injuring her left knee and unable to take any further part in the game.

Canterbury continued their effort and in the 69th minute were awarded their first attacking short corner of the game. This was the moment… could Canterbury score in the final minute to take the game to penalty strokes…

Gilliat-Smith pulled the ball out to Nat Seymour at the top of the circle…the ball was then slipped to Barnes on the left… Barnes fired the ball in towards the keeper… the initial shot saved and the ball was loose… in desperation to score three Canterbury players pounced on the ball… the final attempt… and the ball rolled past the far post! It wasn’t to be!

Canterbury finished fourth! It was an emotional end to a great tournament and despite the scores Canterbury had played some of their finest hockey.

Congratulations to Becky Duggan who was awarded goal keeper of the tournament for her outstanding performances in the last two games.

And as small consolation Canterbury were awarded the ‘Fair Play Award’ for the tournament.

Canterbury 4 Chelmsford 3

With Canterbury's crop of 5 England Internationals not available it gave the chance to others to stake their claim for a place in the squad for this seasons National league campaign.  Canterbury gave 1st XI debuts to new recruits Clair Brown [Joined from Clintonville], Kirsty Chapman [Joined from Maidstone], youngsters Grace Balsdon, Georgina Hoare & 16 year old goalkeeper Becca Smith.

It was Chelmsford who took the lead from their first penalty corner on 10 minutes.  A good save by Smith from the first shot but she was unfortunate to see the rebound deflect off of a Canterbury player to sneak over the line.

Canterbury drew level on 19 minutes from another set piece won after great work by Sarah Kerly.  The initial move broke down but Jen Wilson recovered well and crossed for Jen Milne to poach Canterbury's equaliser.

On 23 minutes Canterbury took the lead when 14 year old debutant Grace Balsdon brilliantly intercepted the ball and her pin point pass found Wilson in the circle who neatly rounded the goalkeeper to give the home side the initiative.

Canterbury increased the lead on 26 minutes, this time created and scored by the other newcomers to the team - Clair Brown working wonders on the right hand side to find Jen Wilson on the base line who crossed for Georgina to score.

The home side were seemingly still celebrating when Chelmsford got back into the game 2 minutes later & on 31 minutes they drew level from another penalty corner.  Again Becca Smith in goal was equal to the first shot but unable to keep the rebound out.

After works by by coaches at half time the second half wasn't as open but Canterbury won the game with a goal on 52 minutes.  Great work by Jen Wilson to find Natasha Brennan who beat two Chelmsford defenders effortlessly and put through Kerly on the keeper, Kerly then rounded off a great display with a neat touch past the oncoming goalkeeper to give Canterbury a deserved victory.

Canterbury entertain Ipswich on Saturday [11.45am start] in their final pre season game before the league starts on the 22nd away to Manchester side Poynton.

Poynton 2 Canterbury 3

Canterbury got off to the best possible start in this years National League campaign taking all 3 points against league newcomers Poynton at Belle Vue, Manchester on Saturday.

Canterbury without England players Mel Clewlow & Cathy Gilliat-Smith due to an enforced rest period after International commitments started well and had the better chances in the opening 10 minutes.  Hayley Brown  shooting narrowly wide on 9 minutes after good work by Jo Bryant & then Sarah Kerly found herself 1 on 1 with the Poynton keeper on 12 minutes but she couldn't find a way past & Hayley Brown's follow up shot again going just the wrong side of the post.

However a minute later Canterbury won their first penalty corner & a well executed move saw the diving Hayley Brown deflect the ball over the keeper to score the first goal of the campaign. The game then entered a scrappy period with both sides struggling to settle with both midfields working hard but making little impression as the game swung from end to end.

With Canterbury's back four being well marshalled by the impressive Natalie Seymour there were few chances for the home side until the 22nd minute when a pass eventually got through the Canterbury lines to Cath Linekar & as the Poynton's centre forward looked to shoot she was harshly adjudged to have been fouled by Canterbury's Georgie Kemsley to win a Penalty for the home side.  However from the spot Linekar failed to beat Becky Duggan in the Canterbury goal.

Linekar made ammends for her miss on 27 minutes when she found space in the Canterbury circle and made no mistake to send the teams in level at half time.  The second half saw Canterbury take the lead on 40 minutes with Jen Wilson causes problems for Poynton on the right hand side and her cross found Tash Brennan whose touch wrong footed the keeper.

Poynton again drew level on 48 minutes when a speculative through ball took a cruel deflection off of a Canterbury defender and fell kindly into the path of two Poynton forwards who played a neat 1-2 past Duggan for Linekar to score her second.

Canterbury regained the lead on 66 minutes when Wilson again causing problems on the right found the hard working Sarah Kerly in the circle whose first time shot flew into the corner of the goal.  Their was still time for the home side to create more chances but Canterbury held out with Lucy Stewart especially making some great tackles to help the Canterbury side take all three points.

Canterbury continue their travels this weekend this time heading down the M4 to take on the other league newcomers Clifton.  Canterbury hope to have available Clewlow, Gilliat-Smith and also Susannah Townsend.

Squad: Duggan, Brown A, Brown C, Brown H, Kemsley, Seymour, Stewart, Milne, Chapman, Wilson, Brennan, Kerly, Bryant.

Canterbury Ladies 3As V Old Williamsonians

For the opening game of the season the Ladies 3As travelled to Medway to play recently relegated Old Williamsonians.Canterbury knew this was going to be a tough introduction to Division 3, having gained promotion last season.

Canterbury absorbed early pressure and the game settled into a well balanced contest, however too many unforced errors in all departments and poor marking allowed Old Willy’s to steal the opening goal.Despite some poor tactical decisions and difficulties juggling a very large squad, Canterbury created enough chances to level the score, but several openings and penalty corners were not converted.

Adopting a more familiar line up for the second half, Canterbury poured forward in force into the opposition’s ‘25’, manufacturing chances time and time again.Unfortunately out of a massive territorial advantage the team repeatedly failed to capitalise on chances and numerous penalty corners.

Old Willy’s rarely troubled the Canterbury defence in the second half but were gifted a second goal when both umpires failed to spot the centre forward’s delicate use of feet before knocking the ball into the net!

Canterbury didn’t allow this set back to dent their efforts, but opportunities continued to be squandered and valuable points were allowed to get away.

This league is going to prove a tough challenge for this team, but on the basis of this weekend’s performance there should be lots of optimism that as the squad gains experience of working together, positive results will be achieved.

Squad:Ali Taft, Nan Haggerty, Jennifer Averill-Richards, Lynn Barwick, Sarah Askew, Annie Hare, Hilde Gevers, Julia Owen, Ellie Larraman, Penny Entwistle, Sally Hayes, Angela Berrie, Jaynie Evans, Calire Bernthal, Bella Pemberton.

Slazenger National League - Clifton 2 Canterbury 3

Canterbury made hard work of keeping their winning start going in the Slazenger National Premier League with a slender victory against newly promoted Clifton in Bristol on Saturday.  Canterbury welcomed back both England Internationals Mel Clewlow and Cathy Gilliat-Smith after their enforced rest period following the summers International duties, but it was Clifton that put Canterbury on the back foot from the start having much the better of the opening 10 minutes with Becky Duggan in the Canterbury goal having to be at her best to stop Clifton taking the initiative.

However it was Canterbury that broke the deadlock after Jo Bryant had won a penalty corner after good work on the left.  From the initial set piece Gemma Ibble in the Clifton goal made a good save but the penalty corner was rewarded after an infringement by a Clifton defender and this time Mel Clewlow made no mistake with a trade mark strike low to the keepers left to take the lead on 28 minutes.

It took just a minute longer for Canterbury to double their lead this time England International Hayley Brown getting in on the act, cutting in from the right to unleash a reverse stick shot that flew past the Clifton keeper.  Canterbury maintained the lead to the break but needed Duggan to be at her best to deny Clifton twice in the last 5 minutes on the half.

The second half saw Clifton take just a minute to reduce the deficit when a free hit from just outside of the circle was deflected in by Carys Hopkins.  This gave Clifton added belief and they went close on 42 minutes hitting the post before drawing level on 55 minutes with a spectacular goal.  The ball crossed in from the left was cleared by Canterbury's Kirsty Chapman but fell to Clifton's Elisabeth Sinton whose first time volley flew past Duggan in the Canterbury goal.

Canterbury had to dig deep and defended well before regaining their compose and scoring a brilliant winner on 59 minutes.  Gilliat-Smith taking the ball from inside her own half and playing 1-2's with Hayley Brown up the pitch, as they got to the Clifton circle Brown's cross was met by a diving Gilliat-Smith to deflect the ball past the Clifton keeper to take all 3 points back to Canterbury.

Canterbury play their first home game of the league season this Saturday versus Olton at Polo Farm 11.45am start.

Squad : Duggan, Chapman, Clewlow, Stewart, Kemsley, Seymour, Milne, Wilson, Bryant, Gilliat-Smith, Brown H, Kerly, Brennan.

Holcs 3 - Canterbury 1

Unfortunately late withdrawals forced the Ladies 3As to travel to Holcs with the minimum of players for their second league game, however from the outset this looked like an even contest and both teams had opportunities to take the lead.

Canterbury were unfortunate not to be awarded a string of penalties when Sally Hayes was repeatedly fouled in the 'D' and goalkeeper infringements went unpunished, but Canterbury's slight superiority paid off when debutante Amber Nicholls drove the ball home for the opening goal.

In the second half Holcs regrouped, utililising their larger squad, which proved testing for this largely 'senior' 3As squad, and an equallising goal was conceeded. However experience and determination paid off and despite the continued barrage Holcs didn't look like breaching the defences again, and a draw looked a strong possibilty.

Canterbury were however dealt an unfortunate blow when defender Bryony Smith was forced to limp from the pitch and with no subs available this stretched Canterbury's resources just too far and two further goals were conceeded in this period. Despite one or two further forays into the Holcs 'D', Canterbury didn't look the dangerous force they had in the first half and they were unable to claw back the deficit.

Although the result left Canterbury with no points from their first two outings in Div 3, this was a much improved performance on last weeks opening game. Whilst this was an excellent alround team performance, Nan Haggerty and Julia Owen deserve mention for their efforts in defence and midfield, and newcomers Ellie Larraman and Amber Nicholls playing up front, demonstrated that they have potential to be exciting players of the future.

Squad: Ali Taft, Nan Haggerty, Jennie Averill Richards, Debbie Roberts, Julia Owen, Annie Hare, Penny Entwistle, Sally Hayes, Ellie Larraman, Amber Nicholls, Bryony Smith.

Canterbury 2 Olton 1

Canterbury maintained there 100% start to the season with another narrow win on Saturday this time against Olton & West Warwick's.  Canterbury in the first half playing some of their best hockey so far this season looked far the better side but couldn't convert their chances with first Hayley Brown shooting just wide after good work by Jen Wilson on 5 minutes and then Wilson herself shooting wide after being picked out by a brilliant through ball by Mel Clewlow on 20 minutes.

However it was Olton who broke the deadlock from their first penalty corner on 24 minutes.  The initial shot was well saved Becky Duggan but the ball rolled onto the foot of Canterbury's Natalie Seymour for a penalty stroke to be awarded that was then expertly converted by Olton's England International Rachel Walker.

Canterbury upped their efforts and this time were rewarded when Jen Wilson won their first penalty corner after good work on the right.  The initial routine was well saved but re-awarded due to an infringement and from the retaken corner Clewlow made no mistake with a blistering strike.

There was still chances before half time for both sides to add goals with first Canterbury keeper Duggan having to be at her best to deny Walker  and then with the last touch of the half Jo Bryant just failed to put the ball away at the far post after Wilson had again made inroads on the Olton right.

The second half saw Canterbury defend resolutely as Olton pressed to take the initiative and they went close on 44 minutes when awarded a penalty corner.  Their strike from the top was deflected off of Wilson's stick and hit the post with Duggan beaten but was then safely cleared by the Canterbury defence.

Canterbury took the lead on 58 minutes when Natasha Brennan disposed an Olton defender in their circle and found Sarah Kerly who neatly popped the ball over the Olton keeper.  The home side held out until the end with Duggan needing to be at her best in the closing minutes for Canterbury third successive win.

Canterbury are away to Old Loughtonians on Saturday but will be without Clewlow, H. Brown, Seymour  & Gilliat-Smith due to a Great Britain training camp.

Squad : Duggan, Clewlow, Milne, Seymour, Brown A, Brown H, Brown C, Wiles, Chapman, Brennan, Wilson, Kemsley, Stewart, Kerly, Bryant, Townsend.

Canterbury 3 Chelmsford 3

Canterbury will look back on this result as 2 points dropped after allowing Chelmsford to come back to snatch a point at Polo Farm on Saturday.  With both sides able to play their Internationals possibly for the last time this season it was a lively encounter with Jen Wilson getting Canterbury's opener on 27 minutes with a cool finish after good work from Hayley Brown and Jen Milne.  However it took Chelmsford just two minutes to get back on level terms from a well worked free hit just outside of the Canterbury circle, with Jessica Chad getting the all important deflection from the free hit.

Canterbury still went into the half time break in the lead thanks to a last minute goal from Jo Bryant netting at the far post from Susie Townsends cross.  The second half saw Canterbury extend their lead on 54 minutes when they were awarded a penalty stroke after Mel Clewlow's strike at he penalty corner was illegally stopped by a Chelmsford defender on the line.  From the stroke Natasha Brennan wrong footed England keeper Katy Roberts to give Canterbury a two goal cushion.

Canterbury were in control but continued their attacking play when perhaps they should have shut up shop.  Then on 60 minutes the game changed with a knee injury to coach Mel Clewlow which required her to be substituted.  Without Clewlow's presence and still angered by the penalty decision this gave Chelmsford renewed heart and they won a penalty corner on 62 minutes which was converted by Tracey Willmore from a straight strike.

Then with just 2 minutes on the clock Chelmsford made good progress down their left side with their cross finding Kate Sharland on the far post to tap in the easiest of equalisers to ensure points were shared.

Canterbury are away next week to champions Leicester with both sides having their international players unavailable.

Squad : Duggan , Wiles, Wilson, Brown C, Brown H, Milne, Stewart, Kemsley, Brennan, Seymour, Bryant, Chapman, Townsend, Kerly, Clewlow.

Match drawn - Leicester 0 v Canterbury 0

At the start of play, both teams were tied in 3rd place in the EHL, with both teams having many players unavailable through England / GB commitments; in a microcosm of the wider situation, it was a case of Leicester's young front line vs. Canterbury's young backline.

The opening exchanges were contested strongly, but fairly, with both teams having periods of good possession. Leicester were able to make more ground in territorial terms with their possession, though Canterbury's defence was resolute - there were few clear cut opportunities for either team. Becky Duggan in the Canterbury goal marshalled her defensive lines very well. The score was tied at nil nil at half time.

The second half saw Leicester come out with all guns blazing, looking for a home win. This was the pattern for much of the half, Canterbury soaking up wave after wave of Leicester attack. Occasionally, the Canterbury Ladies were able to break out - Clair Brown making a good run into the Leicester circle. In the Canterbury goal, Becky Duggan continued her good form, making every save that was needed, and organising the defence very effectively, to nullify the Leicester possession advantage.

At times, there was some desperate defending, Tash Brennan taking some big hits, but ultimately, this effort was rewarded with a hard fought draw in the end. Whilst Leicester had more possession and more of the territory, Canterbury's defence was more than equal to the challenge; Jenna Wiles, Lucy Stewart, Alice Brown & Georgie Kemsley all fought very hard, with skipper Jen Milne sitting just in front of them; the umpires & technical delegate agreed that a draw was a fair result. Whilst Canterbury were up against it for much of the game, the players were all very composed, and thus, there was little if any panic in the team. The odd break and strong running from the forwards also meant that there was a feeling that we may even nick it!

For me, the player of the match for us was Becky Duggan for a number of good solid saves and her excellent organisation. Tash Brennan deserves credit for her bravery and courage in playing on after being hit (hard). We aimed to keep a clean sheet at the start of the day and were well satisfied that we were able to do just that.

Old Loughtonians 3 Canterbury 1

Canterbury's great start to the season came to a sudden halt on Saturday with a disappointing display in Essex.  At a venue where Canterbury have not won for a long time & missing Internationals Clewlow, Gilliat-Smith, Brown and Seymour they struggled to get to get into gear & come the end of the season will look back at 3 valuable points dropped.

It was Canterbury that took the lead after just 8 minutes albeit against the run of play.  Jen Milne's great work on the right hand side beat two Old Loughtonians defenders before her cross was met by Jo Bryant to score.

Canterbury were however finding it hard to deal with Old Loughtonians press and without the huge presence of Clewlow found themselves defending deeper and deeper.  On 13 minutes Old Loughtonians drew level when they were awarded a penalty stroke after a poor Canterbury tackle near to goal. With the City side clearly rattled Old Loughtonians took just a minute more to take the lead - this time Duggan making a brilliant save from the initial shot but the Canterbury defence were unable to clear the rebound which was neatly turned into the Canterbury goal.

The game was now opening up as Canterbury pushed & they went close on 16 minutes with Jo Bryant hitting the post, but it was Old Loughtonians that got the all important third goal.  This time after winning a penalty corner the initial strike was again well saved by Duggan but the Old Loughtonians forwards were quicker to the rebound to volley it home.

The second half saw Canterbury have the chances to get back into the game with all of the forwards having good chances to score but it wasn't to be Canterbury's day.

This week Canterbury welcome back their International players after last weekends Great Britain training camp as they host Chelmsford at Polo Farm on Saturday with Push back at 11.45am.

Squad : Duggan, Milne, Chapman, Brown A, Brown C, Stewart, Kemsley, Wilson, Brennan, Kerly, Bryant, Townsend, Wiles.

Canterbury vs. Slough EHL Premier fixture on Sunday 4th Nov - lost 2-0

At the start of play, Slough were in second place, with Canterbury in joint third - thus, this was a big game for both sides and turned out to be the archetypal game of two halves.

In the first 35mins, Canterbury had the better of the play with Cath Gilliat-Smith going close on a few occasions; some good goal keeping and last ditch Slough defending kept her off the score sheet. The pace of the game was high, with chances at both ends, but the majority of these fell to Canterbury. Jenny Milne had an excellent game in the centre of the pitch for Canterbury, pulling the strings and making some good tackles.

The score was 0-0 at the half.

Slough came out strong in the second half, looking to record their first outdoor win in the league against Canterbury in the last 7 attempts. There was a much more even division of possession and play in the second period, and there was an increasing sense around Polo farm that the first goal could be decisive. Slough were able to fashion some better opportunities than Canterbury, and were able to take advantage of these - Slough scored to lead 1-0, but there was still much to play for. At this point, two decisions that could have gone either way, both went in Sloughs favour (a penalty corner that led to the second killer goal, and a strong penalty stroke shout against Sarah Kerly was waved away). This is not a criticism of the umpires, but at 2-0, there was no way back for Canterbury.

In the end, Slough probably deserved their victory in light of their clinical opportunity taking; for Canterbury, Jen Milne had a good game, particularly in the first half, Cath Gilliat Smith played very well, and Sarah Kerly made some good runs from the bench.

Without Internationals Hayley Brown [Injured], Natalie Seymour [ill] & with Mel Clewlow only able to play a bit part as she recovers from a knee injury, it was Ipswich that created all of the early pressure with 3 Penalty corners in the first 15 minutes.  However with Jen Wilson covering well for Clewlow at the back they failed to find a way past Duggan in the Canterbury goal during their early spell of pressure.

Canterbury slowly found their usual shape and on 22 minutes Tash Brennan went close after a mazy dribble took her past 3 Ipswich defenders only for the goalkeeper to get the faintest of touches to turn the ball around the post, then 6 minutes later Wilson crossed and the diving Gilliat-Smith was just unable to get the necessary touch. But it was the home side that took the lead from their fourth penalty corner a minute from half time with a dipping strike that just eluded keeper Duggan.

The second half saw Canterbury using their forward line pace well but simply weren't enjoying the rub of the decisions with Wilson unlucky not to score when the umpire blew for the short corner for Canterbury when she was through on the keeper and the advantage should have been played.  The home side then doubled their lead when they were awarded a penalty stroke after a poor challenge in the circle by Clewlow from which Leisa King stepped up to convert.  Canterbury still had chances to get back into the game with Clewlow going close on 63 minutes, pushing the ball just the wrong side of the post after a neat one-two from a penalty corner, but it simply wasn't to be their day.

Canterbury 2 Bowdon Hightown 4

On Sunday Canterbury then entertained the league leaders Bowdon Hightown at Polo Farm.  A poor display in the first half saw Canterbury 3-0 down at the break.  Bowdon scored their first when awarded a penalty corner on 17 minutes & then doubled their lead overlapping on Canterbury's left hand side for Lis Chaffney to power the ball through Duggan in the Canterbury goal.  Bowdon then added one more before half time with Chaffney again the goal scorer this time managing to get in front of Alice Brown to deflect home a cross from the right.

With the introduction of Clewlow at half time it seemed a different Canterbury side that took the field for the second half.  They were unlucky to concede a fourth goal on 49 minutes from another Bowdon penalty corner which was initially well saved by Duggan but Bowdon's Annalisa Bishop was on hand to pick up the rebound.  From then on though it was simply Canterbury who took control of the game and deservedly scored on 59 minutes after good work from Jen Milne & Brennan who found Susannah Townsend to score.  Canterbury then added a second on 63 minutes from a Clewlow stroke at a penalty corner but couldn't add any further goals.

It was a great second half performance by the home side playing the type of attacking hockey that their followers have grown accustomed to see at Polo Farm, however their performance in the first half had simply given Bowdon too much of a lead to reverse.

Canterbury entertain Clifton on Saturday 17th Nov at Polo Farm [11.45 push back] in a must win game.

Canterbury 4 Clifton 1

Canterbury moved back into the top half of the table with an emphatic win over Clifton at Polo Farm on Saturday.  It was the City sides first win in six attempts and ended a winless streak which saw their last victory on October 6th in a run that has seen them draw two and lose four.

Canterbury despite being without coach Mel Clewlow & Hayley Brown who were both away with the Great Britain squad, started much the brighter and won two penalty corner in the first 4 minutes.  The first was well saved by Clifton goalkeeper Gemma Ible but the second saw Canterbury take the lead after a simple one-two between Jenny Milne & Natasha Brennan who then passed to Natalie Seymour who slammed the ball home into the corner of the goal.

The home side then doubled their advantage on 15 minutes when Susie Townsend found space on the right and crossed for Seymour but her neat deflection was well saved by Ible, however the ball was cleared back to Townsend on the right who crossed again and this time Seymour made no mistake.

Canterbury went three up on 27 minutes with Susie Townsend again causing problems.  This time she cut in from the right beating two Clifton defenders but was unable to get her shot away and so passed to Jo Bryant who drilled the ball past Ible.

The third goal seemed to stir Clifton who then created two chances before half time that needed Canterbury's goalkeeper Becky Duggan to be at her very best to keep Canterbury's 3 goal advantage into the break.    The second half saw Clifton finally beat Duggan on 47 minutes after a cross from the right was neatly deflected into the goal & then the home side had to dig deep as Clifton looked to claw their way back into the game.

On 59 minutes Canterbury regained their 3 goal advantage when Susie Townsend this time broke on the left and her intelligent pass released Gilliat-Smith one on one on the keeper & she made no mistake.

The final ten minutes saw Clifton still have chances to reduce the deficit but with Duggan in the Canterbury goal and an amazing goal line clearance that capped a superb performance from Georgie Kemsley that ensured Canterbury took the much needed 3 points.

Squad : Duggan, Chapman, Wiles, Kemsley, Stewart, Brennan, Milne, Seymour, Gilliat-Smith, Bryant, Townsend, Kerly, Wilson

Canterbury are now fifth & play the last game before the Christmas break on Saturday away to fourth placed Olton.

Olton & West Warwicks 3 Canterbury 0

Canterbury failed to build on last weeks impressive victory over Clifton with a below par performance against Olton on Saturday.  It was Canterbury's fourth defeat in their last five games & the fourth time that they have failed to score this season and they now go into the mid season break lying in sixth place.

Canterbury with Mel Clewlow & Hayley Brown still away on International duty in Argentina with Great Britain found themselves one down after only 2 minutes.  Olton's own Great Britain Internationals Lucilla Wright & Rachel Walker,  who had missed the Argentina trip due to work commitments, combined well on the right & Walker's cross was met by Mandy Gatherer who deflected the ball high past Duggan in the Canterbury goal.

Canterbury seemed to still be asleep after the long trip North and rode their luck in the first 10 minutes with Walker going close twice.  The City side finally got into the Olton circle on 12 minutes winning their first penalty corner after good work by Natalie Seymour on the left hand side but Natasha Brennan's effort from the set piece was deflected wide.

Canterbury were just starting to find their usual rhythm when they fell two behind on 16 minutes .  Again Walker and Wright the providers with the ball finally falling to Lisa Hunter who shot low to Duggan's right to score.

The second half saw Canterbury with more possession but they simply couldn't find the final ball and they fell three behind on 47 minutes from an Olton short corner.  A half hit shot was neatly deflected by Wright over Duggan for a simple goal.

Canterbury should have pulled one back 5 minutes later when they won another short corner but Brennan's flick was well saved by the Olton keeper and Cathy Gilliat-Smith was just unable to steer the rebound towards the goal.

The last 10 minutes saw Canterbury continue to push but they couldn't find there way past an impressive Olton team & needed Duggan to ensure that Olton were restricted to only 3 goals.

Squad : Duggan, Chapman, Milne, Seymour, Brennan, Stewart, Kemsley, Wilson, Kerly, Gilliat-Smith, Bryant, Townsend, A Brown.

Canterbury now look forward to the Indoor season with there next outdoor league match not until the 9th February.

Canterbury Ladies 1 Kings Alleyns 2

Canterbury Ladies 3As played flowing, stylish, creative hockey on Saturday but their failure to convert many, many chances allowed the visitors, Kings Alleyn, to grab two goals and steal the points.

The 3As bombarded the Kings Alleyn's goal through both halves of the game with skilful play down both flanks, but disorganisation and lack of concentration following the turn around gave the visitors the opportunity to strike twice catching the 3As asleep.

Hockey this good can't go unrewarded and the 3As will reap suitable rewards from such 'classy' performances, providing accuracy can be improved.

Sarah Askew, Posh Entwistle and Gwenno Batty put in excellent performances, with 'Doc' Berrie grabbing Canterbury's consolation goal.

Squad: Ali Taft, Posh Entwistle, Emily Rees, Annie Hare, Lynn Barwick, Bryony Smith, Nicky Camfield, Sarah, Askew, Gwenno Batty, Julia Owen, Doc Berrie, Debbie Roberts, Ellie Larraman and Jaynie Evans.
