CANTERBURY CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER - APRIL 2008

Dear Member,

Welcome to the latest newsletter. With Easter behind us we can now look forward to the start of the new season when work is due to begin our new ground. There will be more on that later. This latest edition of the club newsletter gives me the opportunity to preview the season as well as updating you on various matters and events taking place at the club throughout the summer months.

Indoor League

The club’s fine run indoors ended at the Regional Finals when we were knocked out by Worcester Park Cricket Club from Surrey. However to reach the last eight in national competition is another tremendous achievement.

Kent League

Kent League fixtures begin on 3 May. As previously reported Tim Wren has joined us from Sibton Park and will take over from Matt Jenkinson as 1st XI captain. Mark Slaughter takes over from Ben Cooper as 2nd XI Captain. Our overseas player for 2008 is Caiden Lang, a wicketkeeper batsman from South Africa.

Jenko has started his new coaching role working with our emerging players group with Club Coach Andy Collins.

Kent Feeder League East

Our 3rd XI makes their debut in Division 1E of the Kent Feeder East and will be led by Steve Lamyman. KFL East fixtures begin on 10 May against Kennington.

Sunday Cricket

Mike Burnett will take charge of the Sunday 1st XI. EKL fixtures begin on Sunday 18 May. The Sunday 2nd XI have a number of matches planned and their first game is on Sunday 27 April.

Cockspur Cup

We have been drawn against the Mote in the 1st round of the Cockspur Cup on Sunday 4 May.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are now due and must be paid by 31 May.

Details of subscription rates for 2008 and payment options are enclosed with this newsletter.

Club Practice Nights

Club training will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 8.30 starting on 9 April. I am please to report that we now have two mobile nets to use at training and on match days. All members are welcome to attend. Andy Collins will continue to the co-ordinate the coaching at training and match days.

Ground Development

Work on our new ground is set to begin in the next few weeks. Weather permitting; the work should take 2-3 weeks to complete. The ground should be ready for use by the start of the 2010 season although we may look to play some games at the back end of the 2009 season.

Fund Raising

Although the funding is in place from the ECB to finance the construction of our new ground, we still have to raise money as our contribution towards the cost of the project.

It is vital that all members play their part in the club’s fundraising efforts by supporting all of the forthcoming social events. Details will be circulated at the start of the season. To this end, each team will be tasked with raising £200 by the end of the 2008 season. What is YOUR side doing? Ask your team captain or manager.

100 Club 2008

Equally important is your support for our 100 Club. Tickets are now on sale and cost just £10. Tickets are available from David Garrett or any of the club’s captains and team managers. Results of each draw will posted to the notice board and on the web site.

Canterbury Sixes

The Canterbury Sixes is to take place on Monday 26 May. The event is sponsored once again by Blatch & Green and there is a £250 prize for the winning team. Please support this event and enter your team.

Discipline

A reminder that players representing Canterbury Cricket Club are expected to maintain the highest standards of behaviour both on and off the field of play. The Club fully endorse the Kent League Voluntary Code of Conduct, which is re-produced in the KL Handbook.

Junior Cricket

The club is holding a junior cricket open evening on Tuesday 22 April.

We will be running U11, U13 and U15 teams in the local league and cup competitions this year as well as kwik cricket sessions on Saturday mornings. Junior training nights start on Tuesday 29 April from 5.30pm. Please contact Russell on 01227 738065 if you can help in any way. Details of their fixtures, which will take place on Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, can be found on the Club notice board.

Chance to Shine

We are now in the 2nd year of our Chance to Shine programme. We have good links with six primary schools providing coaching both as part of the curriculum and in after school clubs.

The club held our Chance to Shine Floodlit Kwik Cricket competition for Primary Schools at the end of March. Briary Primary School won the tournament for the 2nd time. Thanks to those of you that helped to make the event such a success.

Website www.polofarm.org/cricket

Andy Collins is doing an excellent job with our website. Increasingly, this will be the main information point throughout the season. Just click on the above link and then proceed to the cricket page. If you are on e-mail and would like to receive information from the club electronically, please send your e-mail address to me at grazie@tesco.net

Hire of our Playing Facilities

We are always looking for ways to make more use of our playing facilities as a means of generating more income. The club will host a number of representative matches throughout the season.Kent U13s will use Polo Farm as their base for all home matches. Herne Bay Cricket Club will be using our 2nd ground for all of their home matches.

Subject to availability, schools, clubs and businesses can hire our facilities at very reasonable rates. Please contact me for more information.

Bar Rota

The club will again be responsible for staffing the bar on Wednesday nights throughout the summer. The bar rota will be circulated in due course. Please make every effort to ensure that the bar rota runs as smoothly as possible. As a club we need to support the bar at every opportunity. If we do not, we may not be able to obtain funding from Polo Farm in the future. This could have a serious impact on the future development of the club.

The London Marathon

Simon Smith will be taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday 13th April.

Smudge will be running in aid of Cancer Reach. Please see our website if you would like to make a donation to this very worthwhile cause.

Travel Plan for PFSC

As previously reported, Polo Farm has implemented a Travel Plan, which addresses travel issues raised by the development of our sporting facilities. In order to ease congestion you are asked to car share whenever possible. There is now a travel information board in the reception area of the Clubhouse.

And Finally......................

The first fixtures of the new season will take place over the weekend of 19-20 April with a club-training day at Polo Farm on Saturday 12 April. Team managers will be contacting you in due course to check on your availability.

I do hope you have an enjoyable and successful season.
